Ethical Guidelines for All AMVETS Members

AMVETS members are bound by ethical principles and standards of conduct outlined in the organization's

National and Department Constitutions and By-laws, as well as local Post House Rules. These documents emphasize a set of ethical expectations for all members.

  • Conduct Unbecoming a Member: The National Bylaws state that disciplinary action can be taken against  a member for "conduct unbecoming a member of AMVETS," which is a broad  standard covering behavior that harms the organization's reputation or  mission.
  • Respect and Professionalism: Members are expected to treat all other members, employees, guests, and  the general public with dignity, diplomacy, and courtesy. Harassment or  abusive language is generally not tolerated.
  • Upholding Democratic Principles: Members are expected to respect the organization's structure, including  accepting the rule of the majority gracefully and adhering to the  Constitution and By-laws.
  • Non-Political Stance: AMVETS, at the Post, Department, or National level, is a non-political  organization. Its facilities and name should not be used to promote  individual political candidates, parties, or products.
  • Loyalty and Honesty: Members are expected to act with integrity and honesty. Charges against  members or officers often include grounds like disloyalty or  dishonesty.
  • Responsible Use of Post Property and Privileges: Members are expected to follow "House Rules" at local posts, which cover items such as:
    • No fighting, disruptive behavior, or the use of profane language.
    • Prohibition of illegal substances or outside alcohol on the premises.
    • Responsibility for the conduct and actions of their guests.
    • Adherence to rules regarding the appropriate use and handling of Post property.

These  rules serve to maintain a safe, respectful, and professional  environment consistent with the organization's aims of serving veterans  and building community.
